OBSIDIAN

The science

Obsidian displaying conchoidal fracturing, the top though, is a polished point (polished by human).

Obsidian forms from viscous magma rapidly cooling after eruption. As a geologist, it’s my duty here to educate you on the previous sentence.

Here we go…the term “viscous” means “thick and sticky” and is slow moving (think about molasses or maple syrup). The term “magma” refers to the liquid material within a volcano (not to be confused with “lava”).

Obsidian forms from viscous magma rapidly cooling. So, you’ve got a super hot, super thick material that’s just been expelled at high pressure into the cool air becoming Mother Gaia’s glassware. The two extremes Obsidian has been through in a matter of seconds defines the rock itself.

THE MAGIC

Pretty neat, right? This earthy glassware can teach us something too. Obsidian is known for its protection and manifesting vibes; it’s a “no BS” crystal! In terms of manifesting, the rapidness it experiences in formation helps us to recognize how fast our own desires and goals can form. In terms of protection, your working with a stone that gets right to the point, and fast. No time for negative energy, whatsoever.

Here’s a fun takeaway:

Obsidian has what’s called “conchoidal fracturing”, when it’s broken. You can see this in the photo above, just below the polished point. Obsidian, doesn’t have any rules when it breaks because it doesn’t have any internal crystalline structure. Every piece you’ll ever see is unique!
